Story ideas parents start with
What happens in a magic and wizards book
A magic book gives your child their own wand, a spellbook and a spell that goes not quite to plan. They might start at a school for young wizards and witches, find a magic cat in the attic or brew a potion that turns the kitchen upside down. The magic is all original, with no borrowed characters from other books or films, so the story belongs to your child alone. It suits imaginative four-to-nine-year-olds.
How a book like this might begin
The wand was in a dusty box at the very back of Grandma’s attic, wrapped in a scarf covered in stars. Oliver gave it a tiny wave. A teacup rose off the shelf, spun twice in the air, and poured itself a perfect cup of hot chocolate. Oliver looked at the wand. The wand seemed to look back at him. “Well,” he whispered, “what else can you do?”
By lunchtime the wand had turned the cat purple, made the stairs go the wrong way and filled the bathtub with bubbles that would not pop. Grandma came up the attic steps, looked around and laughed. “I wondered when you would find that,” she said. “Shall I teach you the rules?”
An example. Every book is written fresh for your child, so yours will be its own story.
Details that make it theirs
- Their wizard or witch name
- A magic pet or familiar
- A spell they would most like to cast
- Whether it is set at a magic school or at home
When families give it
Magic books are given for birthdays, a wizard or witch themed party, Halloween or simply to a child who loves to pretend. Siblings can each get a wand and a magic pet of their own, and grandparents can be the wise old wizard who keeps the spellbook.

Can it be a little spooky?
Only a little, if you ask. By default the magic is cozy and funny, written to be gentle for young children.
