What happens in a camping book

A camping book takes your child out under the stars: pitching the tent, hiking to a waterfall, toasting marshmallows and hearing the owls at night. It is a good fit before a first camping trip, when a child is nervous about sleeping somewhere new, or as a keepsake afterwards with the real places in it. Backyard tents count too, and so do the grown-ups who snore.

How a book like this might begin

The tent was up, mostly. Ava’s sleeping bag was rolled out, the flashlight was in her pocket, and the campfire was crackling. Grandpa handed her a stick with a marshmallow on the end. “Hold it just above the flames,” he said. Somewhere in the dark trees, an owl hooted, and Ava decided that sleeping outside was going to be the best thing ever.

When the fire burned low, Grandpa pointed up. “That one is the Big Dipper,” he said, “and that bright one is a planet, not a star.” Ava lay back on the cool grass and counted until her eyes grew heavy. Then a rustle in the bushes made her sit straight up.

An example. Every book is written fresh for your child, so yours will be its own story.

Details that make it theirs

  • Where you camp, or where you are going
  • Who comes along, including pets
  • Their favorite camp food
  • Anything they are nervous or excited about

When families give it

Camping books are given before a first family trip, as a souvenir after a summer at a lake or campground, or for a scout or outdoor-loving child’s birthday. Add the real names of the trail, lake or campground and the book becomes a record of that trip.

Printed books ship in about 8–15 business days, so order about three weeks ahead. You can read it on screen the moment it is made.
